Description
It works by binding to penicillin-binding proteins and interfering with cell wall synthesis. In this way it inhibit synthesis of cell wall peptidoglycan and inactivates inhibitors to autolytic enzymes. -

Uses
Ampicillin is utilized for the following therapeutic indications:
- Treatment of a variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections
- Management of urinary tract infections
- Treatment of meningitis
- Effective against gram-positive and some gram-negative organisms

Dosage
Dose must be taken according to doctor’s advice only; doses given below are suggested as supportive literature for better understanding in some areas of requirements. Adult Dose: Oral 250-500mg every 6hour. IV/IM Injection: 1-2g every 4-6hours or 50-250mg/kg a day divided every 4-6hours; do not exceed 12 g per day. Pediatric Dose: Injection: 25-200mg/kg per day as IV/IM injection divided every 6-8hours; do not exceed 12 g a day. Oral dose: 50-100mg/kg a day divided every 6hours; do not exceed 2-4 g per day. -
In case of Overdose
Overdose can result in upset of stomach and diarrhea, consult your doctor in case of overdose to this drug. -
Missed Dose
In case you missed any dose, take the next dose as soon as you remember but don't double your next dose to compensate for the missed one. -

Should be used as prescribed. -
When Not to Use
Ampicillin is contraindicated in patients with severe hepatotoxicity and renal failure. -
