  • Description

Famotidine 40mg Syrup/Suspension primarily works by inhibiting the action of histamine at the H2 (histamine-2) receptors in the stomach. It selectively blocks these receptors, which are responsible for stimulating acid secretion. By doing so, famotidine significantly reduces gastric acid production, creating a less acidic environment in the stomach. This mechanism helps in providing relief from conditions associated with excess stomach acid, such as acid reflux, heartburn, and peptic ulcers, by decreasing the acidity of the gastric juices.

    • Caution is advised when using Famotidine with antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, as it may decrease the absorption of Famotidine.
    • Famotidine can also interact with drugs that are sensitive to changes in stomach pH, potentially affecting their absorption.
  • Food Interactions

Following are the food interactions for Famotidine 40mg Syrup/Suspension:

    • Famotidine can be taken with or without food, but certain foods can impact its absorption. It is best to avoid high-fat meals as they may delay the absorption of the medication.
    • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption as it can increase the acidity in the stomach and reduce the effectiveness of Famotidine.
    • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be consumed with caution. These can affect the metabolism of Famotidine, potentially increasing its levels in the body and the risk of side effects.
    • Caffeine intake should be monitored. While Famotidine doesn't directly interact with caffeine, excessive caffeine can stimulate acid production and potentially reduce the medication's efficacy.
    • Spicy foods may not interfere with Famotidine's action, but they can irritate the stomach and potentially worsen symptoms, especially in individuals with gastritis or peptic ulcers.
    • Dairy products are generally safe, but some individuals might experience increased acid production after consuming dairy, which could reduce the effectiveness of Famotidine.
    • Avoid smoking as it can stimulate stomach acid production and potentially interfere with the medication's effectiveness.
    • Always ensure you are well-hydrated when taking this medication, as proper hydration aids in better absorption and overall health.
