  • Description

Phenylephrine, a sympathomimetic amine, acts as a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist, causing vasoconstriction of the conjunctival and episcleral blood vessels, thereby reducing ocular redness and inflammation. Sulphacetamide, a sulfonamide antibiotic, exerts its effect by inhibiting the synthesis of folic acid in susceptible bacteria, thereby disrupting their growth and proliferation. Prednisolone and prednisone are corticosteroids that possess potent anti-inflammatory properties. They bind to cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptors, altering gene expression and suppressing the release of inflammatory mediators, leading to a reduction in ocular inflammation, itching, and allergic responses.

    • The ointment may enhance the systemic absorption of topical steroids, including prednisolone and prednisone, leading to increased corticosteroid effects.
    • Using this combination with other topical steroids or immunosuppressants may increase the risk of skin atrophy and other local side effects.
    • Prednisolone and prednisone can interact with antidiabetic medications, making blood sugar control more challenging.
    • They may also reduce the effectiveness of live vaccines and increase the risk of infections.
    • Caution is advised when combining with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as it may increase the risk of gastrointestinal issues and mask the signs of infection.
  • Food Interactions

Following are the food interactions for Phenylephrine, Sulphacetamide, Prednisolone, and Prednisone Ointment:

    • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be avoided as they may inhibit certain enzymes, leading to increased drug levels in the body and potential side effects.
    • Alcohol may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding when taken with Prednisolone or Prednisone.
    • High-sodium foods should be consumed in moderation, as Prednisolone and Prednisone can cause sodium retention.
    • Sulphacetamide may decrease the absorption of folic acid, so ensure an adequate intake of folate-rich foods.
    • Phenylephrine may interact with caffeine, so monitor your caffeine intake from coffee, tea, or energy drinks.
    • Dairy products may interfere with the absorption of Sulphacetamide, so consider spacing out the consumption of milk, cheese, or yogurt.
    • Vitamin C-rich foods might be beneficial as they can enhance the effectiveness of Sulphacetamide.
    • Avoid high-fat meals, as they can delay the absorption of Prednisolone and Prednisone.
  • Storage/Disposal

Phenylephrine, Sulphacetamide, Prednisolone, and Prednisone Ointment should be stored in a cool and dry place, preferably at room temperature, ensuring protection from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the ointment in its original container tightly sealed to maintain its integrity. Avoid storing it in bathrooms or near heat sources to prevent temperature-induced degradation. Dispose of any unused or expired ointment responsibly; do not flush it down the toilet or pour it into drains. Consult your pharmacist for appropriate disposal methods, and keep all medications out of children's reach to prevent accidental exposure.
