Atenolol is a cardioselective beta-blocker that blocks beta 1 adrenoceptors. This inhibition decreases cardiac output by producing negative chronotropic and inotropic effects

Used to treat:

• high blood pressure
• chronic angina
• heart failure
• also used to improve survival after a heart attack

To be taken as per doctor's prescription

Overdosing may cause decreased heart rate, cardiac output and blood pressure. Consult a doctor in case of overdose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next scheduled dose then the missed dose can be skipped.

Take this medicine with a full glass of water after meals or on an empty stomach

Contraindicated in case of:

• sinus bradycardia
• heart block greater than first degree
• cardiogenic shock
• overt cardiac failure
• asthma

Common side effects include:

• headaches
• diarrhea or constipation
• feeling dizzy or weak
• cold hands or feet
• nausea or vomiting

Your healthcare provider needs to know immediately if:

• you feel chest pain or discomfort after use
• dilated neck veins
• allergic reaction to it
• you become less alert than you are normally
• you have breathing problems

Drugs that can interact include:

• diphenhydramine
• anti-depressants
• calcium channel blockers
• clonidine
• digoxin
