  • Description

Chlorhexidine gluconate is a topical antimicrobial agent and chemical antiseptic used in skin cleansing and prevention of infections in minor skin injuries. It is also a deodorant. This substance kills bacteria, viruses, and fungi agent upon topical application due to its protein-bonding properties, which cause cellular membrane disruption and leakage of essential cellular components, leading to microbe death. It is also believed to work by inhibiting a bacterial enzyme involved in fatty acid synthesis, affecting microbial cellular component production. Chlorhexidine gluconate can be found in many household soaps, washes, and disinfectants. Thus, it helps reduce the transmission of germs and bacteria that cause infections, and its exact mechanism of action is not fully understood.

  • Uses

Chlorhexidine is utilized for the following therapeutic indications:

    • Antiseptic for skin disinfection
    • Wound cleansing and infection prevention
  • Dosage

Tailoring Treatment for Optimal Health, Prescribed Medication Dosage is:

    • Mouthwash- Use approximately 10ml (2 teaspoons) mouthwash for oral use by swishing it around your mouth for 30 seconds and spitting it out. Do not swallow it.
    • Surgical scrubbing- Wet the surgical site with sterile water or rinseate before gently scrubbing it with a saturated surgical sponge or gauze for a minimum of 2 minutes. To prepare a 0.2% surgical scrub solution, mix 0.1 g of Chlorhexidine Gluconate Powder per 100 ml of water or 6 grams per liter (approximately 0.2%).
    • Skin preparation- Apply the solution topically to the area being treated using a sterile swab or sponge moistened with the solution for skin preparation of the surgical site. To make a 0.2% skin preparation solution, dissolve 2 grams of Chlorhexidine Gluconate Powder in 100 ml of sterile water.
  • In case of Overdose

If an individual has overdosed on chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2%, there are several steps that may be taken to address the situation. The first step is typically induced vomiting within the first couple of hours after ingestion, which can help eliminate the drug from the body before it absorbs. If the overdose recently occurred, administering activated charcoal can help bind the drug in the digestive tract, minimizing absorption. During this time, the individual may be monitored closely for symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache, tremors, and confusion. If symptoms arise, they may be treated with anti-nausea medications or other medications that specifically counteract the effects of chlorhexidine gluconate 0.2%. In severe cases, intensive care unit monitoring may be necessary, and dialysis may be considered if the symptoms are life-threatening. However, dialysis is usually not very effective for this drug because it has low solubility in water. It is important to note that the specific treatment approach must be individualized for the best results and should be guided by a knowledgeable medical professional.

  • Missed Dose

When it comes to missing a dose of Chlorhexidine Gluconate 0.2%, it is important to take action promptly. You can apply the missed dose as soon as you remember, but if it is almost time for your next scheduled application, it is best to skip the missed dose and resume your regular medication schedule. Doubling up on doses or taking extra medication to make up for a missed dose is not recommended. If you are uncertain about how to proceed or have any questions about the medication, it is advisable to consult with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance. Is there any more information I can add to this?

  • How To Use

When using chlorhexidine gluconate, it is important to follow the instructions provided by your medical professional or on the medication bottle or box. Make sure to thoroughly clean the affected area of skin with soap and warm water to remove dirt and bacteria. Before applying the medication, ensure that you have shaken the bottle well to mix the medication properly. Use either the applicator supplied with the medication or a clean cotton swab to apply a thin layer of the liquid to the affected area. If you are using the topical cream version, squeeze a small amount onto your finger or a sterile gauze pad. It is important to apply the medication as directed by your doctor, which is typically 2-3 times daily. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible, but if it is close to the next application, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. It is also important to not apply more chlorhexidine gluconate or use it more frequently than recommended as this can lead to side effects. Also, be sure to follow any additional instructions if you have infections in the eyes, ears, or mouth, and use any prescription drops or mouthwash as advised by your doctor. Finally, continue to use chlorhexidine gluconate for as long as recommended by your doctor or medical professional, typically until the infection has cleared, or for a few days after symptoms improve, to ensure that the infection is fully treated and to reduce the risk of recurrence. Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you.
