Cefixime is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that functions through a multi-step mechanism of action. First, it penetrates bacterial cell membranes effectively. It then binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), which are essential for cell wall synthesis. This binding inhibits transpeptidation, disrupting the formation of the bacterial cell wall and leading to cell lysis. Cefixime demonstrates effectiveness against a range of gram-negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli and Neisseria gonorrhoeae.

Cefixime is used for:

• Bacterial infections
• Respiratory infections
• Urinary tract infections
• Ear infections

Cefixime dosage for the indication of bacterial infections (respiratory, urinary), with a duration of 7-14 days:

• Adults - 400 mg once daily or 200 mg twice daily.
• Children - (>6 months) 8 mg/kg/day in 1-2 divided doses.

Overdose can cause severe gastrointestinal upset, and kidney dysfunction. Seek immediate medical care and manage symptoms accordingly.

If you miss a dose, consume as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next feeding, skip the missed dose. Do not double up on doses.

Usually taken once daily or in divided doses, with or without food. Follow the prescribed dosage for the full course of treatment.

Cefixime should not be used if:

• Hypersensitivity
• Renal impairment
• History of gastrointestinal disease (risk of colitis)

The food interactions that should be considered while using cefixime are:

• Taking with food, particularly high-fat meals, can help reduce gastrointestinal side effects but may slightly delay absorption.

Cefixime should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. It should be kept in its original container and out of reach of children. Unused or expired Cefixime should not be flushed down the toilet or poured into a drain. Dispose of it following local disposal guidelines or use a drug take-back program.
