  • Description

    Phenobarbitone is a barbiturate that enhances the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at GABA-A receptors in the central nervous system. This increases the influx of chloride ions into neurons, leading to hyperpolarization and reduced neuronal excitability, which has anticonvulsant and sedative effects.

    It is indicated in All forms of epilepsy except typical absence seizures and status epilepticus
  • Dosage

    Debritone dosage for the indication of insomnia and seizure control, duration as prescribed:

    • Adults - 5-10 ml at bedtime.
    • Children - 1-5 ml as directed.
  • In case of Overdose

    Overdose can lead to severe sedation or respiratory depression. Seek immediate emergency medical care.

  • Missed Dose

    If you miss a dose, consume as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next feeding, skip the missed dose. Do not double up on doses.

  • How To Use

    Taken orally as prescribed, usually once or twice daily. Follow the dosage instructions and schedule.

  • When Not to Use

    Phenobarbitone should not be used if:

    • Hypersensitivity
    • Severe liver impairment
    • History of drug abuse

    Avoid in Acute porphyrias p. 1120 . children . debilitated . elderly . history of alcohol abuse . history of drug abuse .respiratory depression (avoid if severe)
  • Drug Interactions

    The drug interactions with phenobarbitone include:

    • CYP450 Inducers (e.g., rifampin) – Can decrease phenobarbitone levels.
    • CNS Depressants (e.g., alcohol) – Can enhance CNS depressant effects.
  • Food Interaction

    Phenobarbitone has no documented food interactions that affect its efficacy or safety.

  • Storage/Disposal

    Phenobarbitone should be stored at room temperature, away from light and moisture. Keep it in its original container and out of reach of children. Dispose of expired or unused Phenobarbitone according to local disposal guidelines or through a drug take-back program.
