  • Description

    Azithromycin; It is of Semi Synthetic origin and belongs to the Azalide group. It belongs to the antibacterial (Protein synthesis inhibitor) pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and is also classified in the antibiotics pharmacological group. Azithromycin interferes with protein synthesis in bacteria and in this way it prevents bacterial growth. It works by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, thus inhibiting translation of mRNA while nucleic acid synthesis is not affected. Oral absorption of Azithromycin is found to be 34% ±19. Volume of distribution is found to be 31.1 U/kg and plasma protein binding is 51%. Renal Excretion accounts for < 10% and plasma half-life is 68%.

  • Dosage

    Dose must be taken according to doctor’s advice only; doses given below are suggested as supportive literature for better understanding in some areas of requirements. Size of one leveled teaspoon is 5ml and each 5ml of this suspension contains: 250mg, so calculate its dose accordingly. Adult dose: 500mg once daily or 250mg twice daily. For typhoid fever,the dose is 500mg to 1000mg once daily for 5-7 days. Oral dose for Infants, Children over 6 months, and Adolescents: 5 to 12 mg/kg/dose, typically administered as 10 to 12 mg/kg/dose on a day while usual maximum dose is 500mg/dose. Followed by 5-6 mg/kg once daily (usual maximum dose: 250 mg/dose).
  • In case of Overdose

    Consult your doctor in case of overdose. The typical symptoms of an overdose with macrolide antibiotics include reversible loss of hearing, severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In the event of overdose, the administration of medicinal charcoal and general symptomatic treatment and supportive measures are indicated as required.
  • Missed Dose

    If you miss any dose then take the dose as soon as you remember, but if it's the time for the next dose then do not double the dose.
  • How To Use

    Take it orally according to your doctor's instructions.
  • When Not to Use

    Azithromycin is contraindicated in conditions like; hepatic impairment and hypersensitivity to this drug. This drug should not be given to Pregnant ladies, patients suffering from kidney dysfunction and neonates as it may cause high risks.

    Dizziness Vertigo Headache Fatigue Nausea Vomiting Palpitation Abdominal pain Rashes Photosensitivity GI disturbance Azithromycin can prolong the QTc interval (heart rhythm abnormality).
  • Precautions & Warnings

    Azithromycin should be used with caution in patients with any allergy, especially allergies to drugs, liver disease, jaundice, history of colitis, stomach problems or kidney disease. This drug should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy or lactation.
