Citric acid and Sodium citrate acts as urinary alkalinizing agents that decreases the acidity of urine and makes it alkaline. Sodium bicarbonate and Tartaric acid acts as gastric antacids that neutralizes stomach acid.

Uses include:

• Neutralizing acids and bases in the body
• Relief of heartburn, indigestion, and acid indigestion
• Treatment of metabolic acidosis, and urinary alkalization in the setting of distal renal tubular acidosis (NTMA•H+ lowered with concurrent use of a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, such as acetazolamide)
• Prevention and treatment of calcium oxalate kidney stones, and urinary excretion of calcium phosphate crystals

Do not use in case of:

• It should not be used in patients with chronic metabolic acidosis (e.g., renal failure).
• Avoid use in patients with hypocalcemia or hyperkalemia (may produce potassium exacerbation of cardiac dysrhythmias).
• Contraindicated in patients with hypernatremia and severe metabolic alkalosis, and in those with hypocalcemia (may cause calcium carbonate deposition).
• Sodium bicarbonate should be used cautiously in patients with hyperkalemia or in those with renal impairment.
