Somatropin is a human growth hormone (hGH) analog. It works by replacing growth hormones that are normally produced in the body, which may result in increased growth, body weight, and improved absorption of nutrients and fluids from the intestines.

Human Growth Hormone Analog

This medication is used to treat:

• Patients with growth failure due to deficiency of endogenous (internal) growth hormone
• Turner syndrome (a condition in the female when one of the x chromosomes is missing)
• Growth retardation in children with chronic renal insufficiency (poor kidney function)
• Prader-Willi syndrome (loss of function of a specific gene that leads to constant hunger thus leading to obesity and type 2 diabetes) in children

Follow these dosage instructions:

• Adult Dosage

The dosage is weight-based. Initial Dose should not be more than 0.004 mg/kg subcutaneously once a day (or a total of 0.04 mg/kg per week in divided doses). Your doctor will determine the length of the treatment and may adjust the dose after some time.

• Child Dosage

The dosage for the child is strictly recommended by the doctor. However initial dosage is usually 0.04-0.07 mg/kg subcutaneously once a day.

Overdose symptoms include swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs, excessive sweating and body odor, enlarged hands, feet, lips, nose, and tongue, and joint or muscle weakness. Seek emergency medical help if you think you have taken too much of this medicine.

If you miss a dose, make sure to take it as soon as possible the same day. If you don't remember missing the dose, don't double it. Consult your doctor on how to adjust the missing doses.

Somatropin is injected into a muscle or under the skin. A healthcare provider can teach you how to properly use the medication by yourself. Do not inject the subcutaneous injection (under the skin) into the same place two times in a row. Read and carefully follow any Instructions for Use provided with your medicine.

You should not use this medication if you have a hypersensitivity to any of the components of this medicine.

Common side effects include:

• Skin thickening at the injection site
• Injection site pain, redness, swelling, or itching
• Headache
• Muscle or joint pain
• Sore throat, cough, fever, or other signs of infection
• Ear pain
• Flatulence or large amounts of gas in the intestines or bowels
• Hair loss

You should practice these cautions before taking the medicine:

• Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating, and there’s no safer alternative available.
• Talk to your doctor if you have hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to any of the components in the medicine.
• Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease.
• Do not drive after using this medication as it can affect your ability to drive.
• You should get your thyroid function monitored while on this medication.
