  • Description

Ferrous Fumarate Tablet acts as an oral iron supplement, primarily used to treat and prevent iron deficiency anemia. Its mechanism of action involves the replenishment of iron stores in the body. When ingested, ferrous fumarate dissociates into ferrous iron (Fe^2+) and fumarate in the acidic environment of the stomach. Fe^2+ is then available for absorption in the duodenum and upper small intestine, where it is transported into enterocytes (cells of the intestinal lining) via specific transporters, such as Divalent Metal Transporter 1 (DMT1). Within the enterocytes, ferrous iron is either stored as ferritin or bound to transferrin for transport into the bloodstream. The absorbed iron replaces iron losses, enhances the production of red blood cells, and supports the synthesis of hemoglobin, thereby improving oxygen transport and alleviating symptoms associated with iron deficiency anemia.

If you miss several doses, inform your healthcare professional and follow their advice on how to resume your medication safely. It is generally recommended to take the missed dose within a 12-hour window of the scheduled time to maintain therapeutic levels of the medication.

Following are the drug interactions for Ferrous Fumarate Tablet:

    • Antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium may decrease iron absorption, so separate administration by 2-3 hours.
    • Concomitant use with tetracycline antibiotics can reduce the absorption of both iron and the antibiotic. Separate doses by at least 2 hours.
    • Levodopa may be less effective when used with Ferrous Fumarate, possibly requiring an adjustment in levodopa dosage.
    • Iron can decrease the absorption of quinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin, reducing their effectiveness. Take doses at least 2 hours apart.
    • The absorption of thyroid hormones can be decreased by iron, potentially requiring an adjustment in thyroid medication dosage.
    • Bisphosphonates and iron can interfere with each other's absorption, so separate administration by at least 2 hours.

  • Food Interactions

Following are the food interactions for Ferrous Fumarate Tablets:

    • Citrus fruits and juices, like orange, lemon, or tomato juice, should be avoided as they can hinder iron absorption by binding with the iron in the tablet.
    • Coffee, tea, and milk can reduce iron absorption and should be consumed separately from the tablet, ideally waiting at least 2 hours after taking the medication.
    • Whole grain products and high-fiber foods might decrease iron absorption due to their high phytate content.
    • Foods rich in calcium, such as dairy products, can interfere with iron absorption and should be consumed at different times.
    • Soy-based products and legumes contain phytates and should be consumed in moderation as they may affect iron absorption.
    • Alcohol should be avoided as it can irritate the stomach and potentially impair iron absorption.
    • Vitamin C-rich foods such as bell peppers, broccoli, and strawberries can enhance iron absorption and are recommended to be consumed alongside the tablet.
    • Consuming foods high in iron, like red meat, liver, and beans, can support the effectiveness of the medication.
  • Storage/Disposal

Ferrous Fumarate Tablets should be stored in a cool and dry place, preferably at room temperature, ensuring protection from light and moisture. The original container should be used to maintain the integrity of the tablets and prevent exposure to environmental factors. Avoid storing them in the bathroom or near heat-emitting appliances as temperature fluctuations can impact their effectiveness. It is crucial to adhere to the expiration date indicated on the packaging and promptly dispose of any unused or expired tablets. Proper disposal methods should be followed, avoiding flushing or pouring them down the drain. Consult your pharmacist or local waste management guidelines for safe disposal practices, ensuring that the medication is kept away from children to prevent accidental consumption.
