Fluoxetine is indicated in- Depressive illness Bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa Obsessive compulsive disorders Pre-menstrual syndrome -
Dosage
Fluoxetine dosage for the indication of depression and anxiety disorders, with long-term duration:
- Adults - 20 mg once daily, increased by 20 mg weekly. Max - 80 mg/day.
- Children (8-18 years) - 10 mg once daily, may increase to 20 mg.

In case of Overdose
Overdose can lead to serotonin syndrome or severe gastrointestinal symptoms. Seek immediate medical care.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, consume as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next feeding, skip the missed dose. Do not double up on doses.

How To Use
Taken orally, typically once daily in the morning. Follow the prescribed dosage and duration.

When Not to Use
Fluoxetine should not be used if:
- Hypersensitivity
- Recent use of MAO inhibitors
- Severe liver impairment

Side Effects
Gastrointestinal: Nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, dry mouth, and diarrhoea. Neurological: Anxiety, nervousness, insomnia/ drowsiness and fatigue. Others: Excessive sweating, pruritus, skin rashes associated with liver, kidney and lung involvement. It has therefore been advised that Fluoxetine therapy should be discontinued in any patient who develops a skin rash. -
Precautions & Warnings
As Fluoxetine undergoes hepatic metabolism and renal excretion, it should be used with caution and in reduced doses in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function. Because of its epileptogenic effect, it should be used with caution in patients with epilepsy or a history of such disorders. Fluoxetine may alter glycaemic control and therefore caution is also warranted in diabetic subjects. Depressed patients with suicidal tendencies should be carefully supervised during treatment. Fluoxetine is not usually considered a suitable form of therapy for the depressive component of bipolar (manic depressive) illness as mania may be precipitated. -
Drug Interactions
The drug interactions with fluoxetine include:
- MAO Inhibitors (e.g., phenelzine) – Can cause serotonin syndrome.
- Other SSRIs (e.g., escitalopram) – Can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
- CYP2D6 Substrates (e.g., codeine) – Can increase levels of these drugs.

- Avoid alcohol, as it can increase drowsiness.
