It increases VLDL clearance by stimulating vascular endothelial cell lipoprotein lipase activity. Gemfibrozil binds to PPAR-alpha which, in turn, increases fatty acid oxidation and reduces triglycerides levels.

Contraindicated in:

• patients who are hypersensitive
• breastfeeding or pregnant
• active liver disease
• persistent elevations of serum transaminases
• lung diseased patients

• muscle pain

Cautions include:

• Call your doctor if you have unexplained muscle pain or tenderness
• Stop using if you have a major surgery
