Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size.

5-alpha reductase inhibitors

This medicine is used to treat:

• Benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement)
• Male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) in men

Follow these dosage instructions:

• Adult Males

1 milligram (mg) once a day

• Children and Females

Use is not recommended.

Overdose symptoms include:

If you miss a dose, make sure to take it as soon as possible the same day. If you don't remember missing the dose, don't double it. Consult your doctor on how to adjust the missing doses.

You can take the tablets with or without food. It does not matter what time of day you take it, just make sure it's around the same time each day. Swallow your tablets whole with a drink of water.

Finasteride is contraindicated in these cases:

• Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
• Children
• Pregnant women or women of childbearing age

• Decreased volume of ejaculation
• Breast disorders
