Acarbose is utilized for the following therapeutic indications:

To be used as per doctor's advice

An overdose of acarbose would generally occur if a patient took more than the prescribed dosage of the medication. Severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) may also occur, particularly if acarbose is taken with other medications that can lower blood sugar, such as insulin or sulfonylureas. If you suspect that you or someone else has taken an overdose of acarbose, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. Treatment may involve gastrointestinal decontamination, such as inducing vomiting or taking tablets to absorb the overdose, as well monitoring and management of blood sugar levels.

If you miss a dose of Acarbose 50mg, take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless it is closer in time to your next scheduled dose. In this case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double up on doses to make up for the missed dose. Do not use in case of:

• When a patient is hypersensitive to Acarbose or any of the other ingredients in the medication
• Patients with diabetes should not take Acarbose 50mg unless they are also taking a sugar•lowering drug, because Acarbose can increase the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when used with other sugar•lowering medications.
• It should not be used in patients with impaired kidney function, as Acarbose is excreted by the kidneys and excessive accumulation can occur.

Side effects include:

• Allergic reactions, trouble swallowing, breathing difficulties, feeling of discomfort in the stomach, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, gas, diarrhea or abdominal pain
• Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting
• High blood glucose levels, which may occur if you have risk factors for diabetes
• Joint pain
• Fatigue, headache, and weakness

Precautions include:

• If you are allergic to acarbose or any of the ingredients in Acarbose, you should not take this medication.
• Acarbose is not for treating type 1 diabetes mellitus.
• Acarbose may help control your blood glucose, but it is not a cure for diabetes.
• You may experience gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea when you first start taking Acarbose or when your dosage is increased. These symptoms usually get better over time. However, if you experience severe gastrointestinal distress, contact your doctor.
