Diltiazem inhibits the inflow of calcium ions into the cardiac muscle during depolarization. Reduced intracellular calcium concentrations increase smooth muscle relaxation, resulting in arterial vasodilation and decreased blood pressure.

Seek medical help if you think you have taken too much of this medication.

If you miss a dose, make sure to take it as soon as possible the same day. If you don't remember missing the dose, don't double it. Consult your doctor on how to adjust the missing doses.

The regular tablet is usually taken three or four times a day. The extended-release capsule and tablet are usually taken one or two times a day. Ask your pharmacist if you should take diltiazem with or without food, because instructions may vary with each product. Take diltiazem at around the same time(s) every day.

You should not use diltiazem if you are allergic to it, or if you have:

• A serious heart condition such as "sick sinus syndrome" or "AV block" (unless you have a pacemaker);
• Very low blood pressure;
• If your heart cannot pump blood properly; or
• If you have recently had a heart attack and you have a build-up of fluid in your lungs.

• Headache
