Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate. Folate converts into tetrahydrofolic acid (THF). This compound undergoes several transfer/methylation reactions that are important for synthesizing nitrogenous bases in DNA and ribonucleic acid (RNA) and are necessary for the maturation of red blood cells (RBCs).

• Treat or prevent folate deficiency anemia
• Help your baby's brain, skull, and spinal cord develop properly during pregnancy,
• Avoid development problems (called neural tube defects) such as spina bifida
