  • Description

Sitagliptin 50mg is a drug that inhibits the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4). It works by increasing the levels of hormones called incretins, which stimulate insulin release when blood sugar levels are high. Metformin Hydrochloride 1000mg is a biguanide-class drug that helps lower blood glucose levels. It does so by decreasing glucose absorption, improving insulin sensitivity and reducing glucose production by the liver. This medication is insulin-independent, meaning it does not rely on insulin to lower blood sugar. When used in conjunction, Sitagliptin 50mg and Metformin Hydrochloride 1000mg are able to lower serum glucose levels even more effectively than if they are used alone. This is because Sitagliptin increases the concentration of the incretin hormone GLP-1, which stimulates insulin release and decreases the presence of glucagon. Metformin works to lower glucose levels as well, and also enhances GLP-1 signaling, thereby increasing the effects of Sitagliptin. The combination of these mechanisms provides additive glucose lowering effects, making this combination an effective treatment for type-2 diabetes mellitus, helping to manage serum glucose levels.

  • In case of Overdose

An overdose of sitagliptin and metformin can lead to a dangerous condition called lactic acidosis, where there is a buildup of lactic acid in the blood. This condition can cause various symptoms including weakness, slow breathing, dizziness, confusion, muscle pain or cramps, nausea, slow heart rate, cold or clammy skin, convulsions, loss of consciousness, and blurry vision. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention immediately. In terms of treatment, inducing vomiting and administering activated charcoal can help to remove the toxic substances from the stomach and prevent further absorption. Fluids administered through IV can help flush the drugs out of the system and balance pH levels. Stomach pumping may also be necessary to ensure that all toxic residue is removed. Medications that reverse the effects of the overdose can also be prescribed, along with oxygen therapy to treat any breathing difficulties. In severe cases of metformin poisoning, kidney dialysis may be required. Hospitalization may be necessary for close monitoring and treatment of any ongoing symptoms. It is also vital to emphasize that you should not self-medicate or overdose on any medication, ever. It is important to note that the side effects and risks of overdose of these two drugs are manageable and rarely lead to fatalities if medical care is sought in time. However, it is essential to follow medical advice and ensure you communicate well with your healthcare provider should you be on these medications.

  • Missed Dose

If you have missed a dose of your medication, it is critical that you take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, it is recommended that you skip the missed dose and stick to your regular dosing schedule. It is not a good idea to double up on doses to make up for the missed one. If you are unsure about what to do, it is always best to reach out to your healthcare provider to determine the best course of action. To ensure the effective management of your health condition, it is essential to maintain a consistent dosing schedule as advised by your physician.
