    Loratadine is a second-generation antihistamine that has selectivity for peripheral H1 receptors, this drug is non-sedative because it is not able to cross blood-brain barrier. Loratadine shows its antihistaminic activity by inhibiting H1-receptors located on vascular endothelial cells, respiratory smooth muscle cells, the gastrointestinal tract, and immune cells.

  • Uses

    Loratadine is utilized for the following therapeutic indications:

    • Alleviating symptoms of allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny or itchy nose, and itchy or watery eyes
    • Providing relief from skin hives and itching in patients with chronic skin reactions
    • Managing symptoms of seasonal allergies
  • Dosage

    Dose must be taken according to the doctor’s advice only; doses given below are suggested as supportive literature for better understanding in some areas of requirements. Doses for Symptomatic relief of allergies such as hay fever, and chronic idiopathic urticaria are given below: Adult dose: 10mg once daily. Child dose: For Children of age 2–11 years and body weight up to 31kg: 5mg once daily. For children of age 2–11 years and body weight 31kg and above: 10mg once daily. For children of age 12–17 years: 10mg once daily.
  • In case of Overdose

    Overdose may cause drowsiness, headaches, and an increase in heart rate. Consult your doctor in case of an overdose he will take symptomatic and supportive measures for management.
  • Missed Dose

    In the case you missed any dose, take the next dose as soon as you remember but don't double your next dose to compensate for the missed one.
  • How To Use

    Take orally after a meal or as your doctor prescribed.
  • When Not to Use

    Should not be given to patients with hypersensitivity to loratadine or desloratadine or any of its component mixture.

    Headache Hypertension Tachycardia Palpitations Dermatitis Heavy menstrual bleeding Increased thirst Dysmenorrhea Bronchospasm Pharyngitis Migraine
  • Precautions & Warnings

    Loratadine may cause drowsiness and irritability in breastfed infants so caution is required with its use in breastfeeding mothers. Avoid its use during pregnancy or use with the directions of registered medical practitioners.
  • Food Interactions

    Grapefruit juice may increase blood levels of Loratadine so avoid the use of grapefruit juice along with this medicine.
