Description
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor drug that works by inhibiting secretion of gastric acid by irreversibly blocking the enzyme system of hydrogen/potassium adenosine triphosphatase, the “proton pump” of the gastric parietal cell. This drug is used in conditions, where there is a need for inhibition of gastric acid secretion like; dyspepsia, aspiration syndromes, peptic ulcer disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, and the Zollinger–Ellison syndrome. -

Uses
Duodenal Ulcer, Gastric Ulcer, GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), Erosive Esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (when stomach produces too much acid). -
Dosage
Dose must be taken according to the doctor’s advice only; doses given below are suggested as supportive literature for better understanding in some areas of requirements. Adult dose: To treat duodenal ulcers: 20mg orally once a day before a meal. To treat duodenal ulcers with H. pylori: 20 or 40mg, orally, two or three times a day before meal. To treat H. pylori this medicine is recommended with clarithromycin or clarithromycin plus amoxicillin. Doctor will adjust the dose according to patient’s condition. To treat erosive esophagitis: 20mg one time a day before meal. To treat erosive esophagitis caused by acid-mediated GERD: 20mg one times day before meal. To treat gastric ulcers: 40mg one time a day before meal. To treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): 20mg one time a day before meal. To treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: 60mg one time a day before meal. Children over 17 years of age: To treat erosive esophagitis caused by acid-mediated GERD: 20mg one time a day before meal. Child dose: To treat erosive esophagitis caused by acid-mediated GERD: For children of 1 to 16 years of age, the usual dose is 5 to 20mg one time a day before meal. Dose must be adjusted according to body weight of a child. For children of 1 month to younger than 1 year of age, the usual dose is 2.5 to 10mg one time a day before meal. Dose must be adjusted according to body weight of a child. To treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): For children of 1 year of age and older, the usual dose is 5 to 20mg one time a day before meal. Dose must be adjusted according to body weight of a child. -
In case of Overdose
Over dose of this drug may cause fatigue, nausea, vomiting, headache, and liver and kidney damage. As this drug is plasma protein bound so in this case dialysis is not that useful so your doctor may recommend supportive measures. -
Missed Dose
If you miss any dose then take the dose as soon as you remember, but if it's the time for the next dose then do not double the dose. -
How To Use
Take it orally one hour before meal according to your doctor's instructions. -
When Not to Use
Do not use if you are sensitive to this drug. -

Precautions & Warnings
If you feel dizzy or sleepy after taking this medicine then do not drive any vehicle or operate machinery. Using this drug every day for a long time can affect the absorption of vitamin B-12 in your body that could result in Vitamin B-12 deficiency. -
Drug Interactions
The drug interactions with omeprazole include:
- Clopidogrel – Omeprazole can reduce the effectiveness of clopidogrel, a medication used to prevent blood clots, by inhibiting its conversion to its active form.
- Warfarin – Omeprazole may alter the metabolism of warfarin, affecting its anticoagulant effects and increasing the risk of bleeding.
- Diazepam – Omeprazole can increase the plasma concentration of diazepam, leading to enhanced sedative effects.
- Phenytoin – Omeprazole may increase the levels of phenytoin, a drug used for seizure control, potentially leading to toxicity.
- Tacrolimus – Omeprazole can increase tacrolimus levels, raising the risk of nephrotoxicity.
- Methotrexate – High doses of methotrexate may have increased levels and adverse effects when taken with omeprazole.
- Atazanavir – Omeprazole can reduce the absorption of atazanavir, an antiviral medication, making it less effective.
- Ketoconazole – Omeprazole may decrease the absorption of ketoconazole, an antifungal, reducing its effectiveness.
- Cilostazol – Omeprazole can increase the concentration of cilostazol, potentially causing enhanced effects and side effects.
- Sucralfate – Omeprazole may reduce the absorption of sucralfate, diminishing its therapeutic effect.

Food Interactions
Food can affect absorption of this drug so it must be taken an hour before meal. Try to cut off spicy and fatty food and caffeine drinks to manage your stomach acids levels properly. -
