Description
Dutasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor that works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a more potent androgen that contributes to prostate enlargement. By reducing DHT levels, dutasteride helps to decrease prostate size, alleviate urinary symptoms associated with BPH, and lower the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgical intervention. Tamsulosin, on the other hand, is an alpha-1 adrenergic antagonist (alpha-blocker). It works by selectively blocking alpha-1 receptors in the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck, leading to muscle relaxation. This relaxation improves urine flow and reduces the symptoms of BPH without significantly affecting blood pressure.
