  • Description

Isoconazole, the active ingredient in Isoconazole Tablets, is an antifungal medication that belongs to the imidazole class. Its primary mechanism of action involves inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a crucial component of fungal cell membranes. By binding to specific enzymes called lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, isoconazole blocks the conversion of lanosterol to ergosterol, which is essential for maintaining the integrity and function of fungal cell membranes. This disruption in ergosterol synthesis leads to impaired membrane structure and function, ultimately resulting in the death of the fungal cells. This selective inhibition makes isoconazole effective against a range of fungi, including Candida species, while minimizing effects on human cells, as human cell membranes do not contain ergosterol.

  • Missed Dose

In the case of a missed dose of Isoconazole Tablet, it is important to take the medication as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this may increase the risk of side effects. If you miss multiple doses, contact your healthcare provider for guidance on how to proceed and to ensure that you maintain the medication's effectiveness.

  • Drug Interactions

Following are the drug interactions for Isoconazole Tablet:

    • Alcohol consumption may lead to enhanced side effects, especially central nervous system-related symptoms.
    • Isoconazole may increase the blood levels of certain HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins), potentially leading to increased risk of muscle-related side effects.
    • It can interact with warfarin, increasing the anticoagulant effect and the risk of bleeding. Close monitoring of INR (international normalized ratio) is recommended.
    • Concomitant use with other drugs that prolong the QT interval, such as certain antiarrhythmic medications, may further increase the risk of cardiac arrhythmias.
    • Anticonvulsant medications like phenytoin and carbamazepine may decrease the effectiveness of isoconazole.
    • The effectiveness of isoconazole may be reduced when taken with oral antidiabetic drugs, requiring close monitoring of blood glucose levels.
    • The absorption of isoconazole may be affected by antacids, so they should not be taken simultaneously.
  • Food Interactions

Following are the food interactions to consider with Isoconazole Tablet:

    • Avoid consuming grapefruit and grapefruit juice as they can increase the levels of isoconazole in the blood, potentially leading to increased side effects.
    • Alcohol consumption should be minimized or avoided as it may increase the risk of liver damage, especially with prolonged use of isoconazole.
    • Fatty meals may slightly delay the absorption of isoconazole, but this effect is generally not clinically significant.
    • Dairy products like milk and yogurt may decrease the absorption of isoconazole, so it is recommended to separate these foods from medication by a few hours.
    • Avoid excessive consumption of vitamin C-rich foods like citrus fruits and supplements, as high doses of vitamin C may reduce the effectiveness of isoconazole.
    • Cranberry juice and its products may decrease the effectiveness of isoconazole, so it's best to avoid them during treatment.
    • Caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea may slightly increase the metabolism of isoconazole, which could potentially reduce its effectiveness.
    • Always ensure you are well-hydrated when taking Isoconazole, as adequate fluid intake supports overall health during the treatment period.
  • Storage/Disposal

Isoconazole Tablets should be stored in a secure and dry location, preferably in their original packaging, to maintain their integrity and effectiveness. It is crucial to keep the tablets away from direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures, as these factors can degrade the medication. Always store them in a cool, dry place, ensuring the container is tightly sealed. Regularly check the expiration date, and if the tablets are no longer needed or have expired, proper disposal is essential. Avoid flushing them down the toilet or discarding them in household waste; instead, consult your pharmacist or local waste management guidelines for safe disposal options. Keep the medication out of children's reach to prevent accidental consumption.
