Description
Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent that functions through a multi-step mechanism of action. First, it easily penetrates bacterial and protozoal cell membranes. Inside the cell, metronidazole is reduced by intracellular enzymes to form reactive metabolites. These metabolites bind to DNA, causing strand breakage and inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis, which is essential for cell survival. This leads to the death of the microorganism. Metronidazole is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, including species such as Clostridium difficile and Trichomonas vaginalis.
