l-Methylfolate is a cofactor in the production of monoamines serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which are involved in the regulation of mood and the mechanisms of actions of antidepressants.

L-methylfolate is a medical food for use in people who have conditions related to folate deficiency, such as:

• Poor diet
• Pregnancy
• Alcoholism
• Liver disease

The recommended dosage is 7.5 to 15 mg orally once a day, with or without food.
