Nitrofurantoin is activated inside bacteria by reduction via the flavoprotein nitrofurantoin reductase to unstable metabolites, which disrupt ribosomal RNA, DNA and other intracellular components. It is bactericidal, especially to bacteria present in acid urine.

To be taken as per doctor's prescription. It is usually given up to three to seven days

It's crucial to be informed of the potential risks associated with an overdose. Overdose may be life-threatening in some cases. Time is of the essence, therefore, seek medical care immediately

Try not to miss a dose. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. Then continue your normal schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

Take nitrofurantoin with food

Do not use in case of:

• allergic reaction
• kidney disease
• urinary problems
• history of jaundice and liver problems caused by nitrofurantoin
• last 2 to 4 weeks of pregnancy
• less than 1 month old child

Side effects include:

• watery or bloody diarrhea
• sudden chest pain, wheezing or dry cough
• worsening cold
• lupus like syndrome
• liver problems
• headaches

Cautions include:

• Refer to doctor in case you develop diarrhea after usage
• Avoid taking antacids without your doctor's advice.

Do not use in case you are already using:

• sulfinpyrazone
• magnesium containing antacids
• certain live vaccines
• methotrexate
