  • Description

    Oxytocin increases the amplitude and frequency of uterine contractions, which transiently impede uterine blood flow and decrease cervical activity, causing dilation and effacement of the cervix. Oxytocin causes contraction of the myoepithelial cells surrounding the alveolar ducts of the of the breast.

    It is used for:

    • starting and continuing labor and to control bleeding after delivery
    • milk secretion in breast-feeding sometimes

    To be administered as per instruction of a healthcare practitioner. Dose is adjusted for age, weight and symptoms

  • In case of Overdose

    Seek medical help in case of overdose. Overdose symptoms include pounding in neck and ears, severe headache, severe weakness and feeling unsteady

  • Missed Dose

    Try not to miss a dose. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. Then continue your normal schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

    • detal distress
    • partial placenta previa
    • prematurity
    • predisposition of uterine rupture
    • hydramnios

    Common side effects incllude:

    • nausea and vomiting

    • abdominal pain and cramping
    • cardiac arrhythmia

    Cautions include:

    • be cautious of tearing of the uterus

    • ciprofloxacin
    • cisapride
    • citalopram
