Fluphenazine blocks postsynaptic mesolimbic dopaminergic D1 and D2 receptors in the brain. It depresses the release of hypothalamic and hypophyseal hormones and the reticular activating system, thus rebalancing dopamine to improve thinking, mood, and behavior.

Fluphenazine is utilized for the following therapeutic indications:

• Management of schizophrenia
• Treatment of acute psychotic episodes
• Long-term treatment of chronic psychoses
• Control of severe behavioral problems in children
• Management of agitation associated with schizophrenia or manic episodes

Follow these dosage instructions:

Initial dose

Overdose symptoms include difficulty breathing, rigid muscles or muscle weakness, low blood pressure, and coma. Seek emergency medical help if you think you have taken too much of this medicine.

If you miss a dose, make sure to take it as soon as possible the same day. If you don't remember missing the dose, don't double it. Consult your doctor on how to adjust the missing doses.

Take Fluphenazine by mouth as a tablet or oral liquid (elixir and concentrate). Typically, you need to take it two or three times a day, with or without food. Carefully follow the directions on your prescription label, and if there's any part you don't understand, ask your doctor for clarification.

Do not take this medication if you have:

• Hepatobiliary disease or hepatic insufficiency, because it can precipitate or worsen cholestatic jaundice.
• If your ANC (absolute neutrophil count) is less than 1000
• If there is an unexplained decrease in your WBC count.
• If you have any of these

• Upset stomach
• Weakness or tiredness
• Excitement or anxiety
• Insomnia
• Nightmares
• Dry mouth
• Skin more sensitive to sunlight than usual
• Changes in appetite or weight

You should practice these cautions before taking the medicine:

• Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or lactating, and there’s no safer alternative available.
• Talk to your doctor if you have hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to any of the components in the medicine.
• Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease.
• Do not drive while using this medication as it can affect the ability to focus.
• Don’t consume alcohol while taking this medication.
