Description
Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent that works by causing damage to the DNA of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. This inhibits nucleic acid synthesis and leads to cell death, effectively treating infections.

Uses
Metronidazole is used to treat bacterial infections of the vagina, stomach or intestines, liver, skin, joints, brain, heart, and respiratory tract. Metrogel (topical metronidazole) is also used to treat rosacea, a skin condition. Vaginal metronidazole gel is also used to treat bacterial infections of the vagina -
Dosage
Riam dosage for the indication of bacterial infections, duration of 5-10 days:
- Adults - 15-30 ml 3 times daily.
- Children - 5-10 ml 3 times daily.

In case of Overdose
In case of overdose, nausea, vomiting, and neurological effects might occur. Seek medical assistance for symptomatic treatment.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, consume as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next feeding, skip the missed dose. Do not double up on doses.

How To Use
Usually taken orally 2 times daily with food to reduce stomach upset. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication. Avoid alcohol during and for at least 48 hours after treatment.

When Not to Use
Metronidazole should not be used if:
- Hypersensitivity
- Severe liver impairment
- Alcohol consumption (disulfiram-like reaction)

Side Effects
It can cause agitation, back pain, blindness, dizziness, irritability, lack of co-ordination. -
Precautions & Warnings
Before taking metronidazole, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other antibiotics (such as tinidazole); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details. -
