Description
Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin E1 analog that functions through a multi-step mechanism of action. First, it binds to prostaglandin receptors on gastric parietal cells, inhibiting gastric acid secretion and increasing bicarbonate and mucus production, which protects the stomach lining. In higher doses, misoprostol also stimulates uterine contractions by acting on the smooth muscle of the uterus, leading to cervical dilation and expulsion of the uterine contents. It is particularly effective in preventing gastric ulcers associated with NSAID use and for inducing labor or managing incomplete miscarriages.
