  • Description

Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection is a combination antibiotic. Piperacillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin-class beta-lactam antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting the synthesis of peptidoglycan, which is a critical component of the bacterial cell wall. This leads to cell wall weakening, lysis, and ultimately bacterial death. However, many bacteria produce beta-lactamase enzymes that can inactivate piperacillin. To counteract this, Tazobactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor, is included in the formulation. Tazobactam binds to and inactivates beta-lactamase enzymes, preventing them from breaking down piperacillin and enhancing its antibacterial effectiveness against beta-lactamase-producing organisms.

The following are the uses of Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection:

    • Treatment of moderate to severe infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and intra-abdominal infections.
    • Management of complicated skin and soft tissue infections.
    • Treatment of septicemia and bacteremia caused by susceptible organisms.
    • Management of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) caused by susceptible bacteria.
    • Treatment of bone and joint infections (osteomyelitis) caused by susceptible bacteria.
    • Management of febrile neutropenia in immunocompromised patients, especially those with cancer.
    • Treatment of infections associated with diabetic foot ulcers.
  • Dosage

Following are the doses of Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection:

    • The usual dose for adults with moderate to severe infections is 3.375 grams (2 grams of piperacillin and 0.25 grams of tazobactam) administered every 6 hours via intravenous infusion.
    • For more serious infections, the dose may be increased to 4.5 grams (3 grams of piperacillin and 0.5 grams of tazobactam) every 6 hours.
    • For patients with renal impairment, the dose and frequency may be adjusted based on the degree of renal function.
    • For pediatric patients, the dose is based on body weight, typically 100 mg/kg of piperacillin every 6–8 hours, combined with 12.5 mg/kg of tazobactam.
  • In case of Overdose

In case of an overdose of Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection immediate medical attention should be sought. Overdose symptoms may include symptoms of renal impairment (such as changes in urine output), seizures, or electrolyte imbalances. If an overdose is suspected, the healthcare provider may need to adjust the dosage, provide supportive care, or initiate dialysis in severe cases to remove excess drug from the body. It is important not to attempt any treatments or adjustments on your own.

  • Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not administer two doses at the same time to make up for the missed dose, as this could increase the risk of side effects or overdose. Always follow the dosing instructions provided by your healthcare provider and consult them if you're unsure about what to do after missing a dose.

  • How To Use

To use Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection, follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider or as indicated on the prescription label. Typically, the medication is administered intravenously, and the healthcare provider will determine the correct infusion rate and duration based on your specific condition and infection type.
