Product Information
Tapentadol acts as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system. These receptors are part of the body’s natural pain control system. When tapentadol binds to these receptors, it mimics the action of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body. This binding reduces the perception of pain by blocking pain signals from reaching the brain. Tapentadol also inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine. By preventing the reuptake of norepinephrine, tapentadol increases its levels in the synaptic cleft (the space between nerve cells), enhancing the descending pain inhibitory pathways. This helps to further reduce the sensation of pain.
Tapentadol dosage recommendations:
The usual starting dose is 50 mg every 4 to 6 hours. Your doctor may prescribe a different, more appropriate dose or interval of dosing, if necessary. Total daily doses greater than 700 mg tapentadol on the first day of treatment and daily doses greater than 600 mg tapentadol on the following days are not recommended.
In elderly patients (above 65 years), usually no dose adjustment is necessary. However, excretion of tapentadol may be delayed, and your doctor may recommend a different dosage regimen if this applies to you.
Tapento IR is not suitable for children and adolescents below the age of 18 years.
