  • Description

Dorzolamide, the active ingredient in Dorzolamide eye drops, acts as a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It primarily reduces elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) by decreasing the production of aqueous humor in the eye. This is achieved through the inhibition of carbonic anhydrase, an enzyme present in the ciliary processes of the eye. By blocking this enzyme, Dorzolamide reduces the formation of bicarbonate ions, which are essential for the production of aqueous humor. As a result, there is a decrease in the secretion of aqueous humor, leading to reduced intraocular pressure. This mechanism makes Dorzolamide effective in treating conditions like glaucoma and ocular hypertension by directly targeting the production of fluid within the eye.

  • Ingredients

    Dorzolamide

  • Drug Class

    Carbonic anhydrase inhibitor.

  • Dosage Form

  • Uses

The following are the uses of Dorzolamide Drop:

    • Used for reducing high pressure inside the eye, often caused by open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
    • Used for preserving vision by lowering intraocular pressure.
    • Used for treating fluid buildup in the eye, helping to drain excess fluid and reduce pressure.
    • Used for managing chronic conditions to slow disease progression and prevent optic nerve damage.
    • Used for post-surgical care to reduce the risk of increased eye pressure after certain eye surgeries.
    • Used for improving symptoms like eye pain, blurred vision, and headaches associated with elevated eye pressure.
    • Used for long-term management, requiring consistent use as prescribed for maximum effectiveness.
    • Used for complementing other eye medications as part of a comprehensive eye care regimen.
  • In case of Overdose

In the case of an overdose of Dorzolamide Drops, it is important to remain calm and take prompt action. The first step is to contact a healthcare professional or a poison control center for guidance. They will provide specific instructions based on the severity of the overdose. Treatment may involve monitoring vital signs, administering appropriate medications, and ensuring proper hydration to mitigate potential side effects.

  • Missed Dose

In the case of a missed dose of Dorzolamide Drops, it is important to administer the medication as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you miss multiple doses, contact your healthcare provider for advice on how to proceed, as they may recommend adjusting your dosage or provide specific instructions to ensure the medication's effectiveness.

  • How To Use

To administer Dorzolamide eye drops, gently tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid to create a pocket, and hold the dropper above your eye; release one drop into the pocket, then close your eyes gently to allow the medication to absorb, and avoid blinking or rubbing your eyes for at least one minute after application.

  • When Not to Use

Following are the conditions/situations when Dorzolamide Eye Drops should not be used:

    • Should not be used if you are allergic to Dorzolamide or any other carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.
    • Not suitable for individuals with severe kidney disease or kidney failure.
    • Contraindicated in patients with metabolic acidosis, a condition where there is too much acid in the body fluids.
    • Should not be used if you have respiratory conditions like emphysema or chronic bronchitis.
    • Avoid using these eye drops if you have a history of liver disease or liver impairment.
    • Not recommended for individuals with angle-closure glaucoma, a type of glaucoma where the drainage angle in the eye is blocked.
    • Do not use if you are currently taking acetazolamide, another type of carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, due to potential drug interactions.
    • Dorzolamide Eye Drops are not suitable for children under the age of 2 years.

    • Dorzolamide may interact with other medications; inform your doctor about all the medicines you are currently taking.
    • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before using Dorzolamide, as the risks and benefits should be carefully considered.
  • Drug Interactions

Following are the drug interactions for Dorzolamide Eye Drops:

    • Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors like acetazolamide can increase the risk of systemic side effects when used with Dorzolamide.
    • The effectiveness of Dorzolamide may be reduced when used with oral beta-blockers, leading to decreased intraocular pressure control.
    • Dorzolamide can interact with other topical ophthalmic medications, such as timolol, resulting in altered absorption and potential side effects.
    • Concomitant use with miotics (e.g., pilocarpine) may cause additive intraocular pressure reduction and possible eye muscle weakness.
    • Using Dorzolamide with prostaglandin analogs (e.g., latanoprost) may increase ocular discomfort and potential hyperemia.
    • Caution is advised when combining Dorzolamide with systemic medications that affect the cardiovascular system, as it may enhance their effects.
    • Dorzolamide may interact with certain oral antidiabetic drugs, potentially affecting blood glucose control.
  • Food Interactions

Following are the food interactions for Dorzolamide Drops:

    • Dorzolamide eye drops should be used with caution if you consume a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, as these foods may decrease the bioavailability of Dorzolamide.
    • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice should be avoided as they can increase the concentration of Dorzolamide in the body, potentially leading to increased side effects.
    • Alcohol consumption is not expected to directly interact with Dorzolamide eye drops, but it's advisable to avoid alcohol to maintain clear vision and overall eye health.
    • Avoid caffeine-rich foods and beverages, as they may reduce the effectiveness of Dorzolamide by constricting blood vessels and affecting eye pressure.
    • Chocolate and cocoa products should be consumed in moderation, as they contain compounds that can act as stimulants and potentially interfere with eye pressure control.
    • Limit the intake of salty foods and processed snacks, as high sodium levels can contribute to fluid retention and potentially impact eye pressure.
    • A balanced diet with moderate salt and sugar intake is recommended to support overall eye health and maintain the effectiveness of Dorzolamide.
    • Always follow your healthcare provider's advice regarding dietary considerations while using Dorzolamide drops.
  • Storage/Disposal

Dorzolamide eye drops should be stored properly to maintain their effectiveness and ensure safe usage. Store the unopened bottles in a refrigerator, maintaining a temperature between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and 46°F). Once opened, the bottle can be kept at room temperature, but it must be securely closed to prevent contamination. Keep the drops away from direct sunlight and heat sources, as extreme temperatures can affect their potency. Dispose of any unused or expired medication responsibly; do not flush or pour them down the drain. Consult your pharmacist or healthcare provider for appropriate disposal methods in your area. Always keep medications out of the reach of children to prevent accidental exposure.

  • Quick Tips, if any

Following are the quick tips for Dorzolamide Drops:

    • Wash your hands thoroughly before administering the eye drops to maintain hygiene.
    • Tilt your head back, gently pull down your lower eyelid, and instill the prescribed number of drops into the eye.
    • Close your eyes gently and apply light pressure to the inner corner of the eye for 1-2 minutes to minimize drug absorption into the bloodstream.
    • If you use other eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes before applying the next medication to prevent washout.
    • Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface, including your eye, to avoid contamination.
    • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before using the drops and wait at least 15 minutes after administration before reinserting them.
    • Store the drops at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture, and keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
