Carvedilol is a type of medicine called a beta blocker. Like other beta-blockers, carvedilol works by slowing down the heart rate and making it easier for the heart to pump blood around the body. It also works like an alpha blocker to widen some of the blood vessels, lowering the blood pressure.

Beta-Blocker

This medicine is used to treat:

• Hypertension
• Angina (chest pain due to insufficient blood flow to heart muscle)
• Hypertension due to pregnancy
• Post-myocardial infarction (Heart attack)
• Chronic heart failure (in adjunct with ACE inhibitors and anti-diuretics)

Follow these dosage instructions:

• Adult Dosage

20 milligrams (mg) once a day for 7 to 14 days. Your doctor may adjust your dose as needed. However, the dose is usually not more than 80 mg once a day.

• Child Dosage

The dosage for the child is strictly recommended by the doctor.

Overdose symptoms include low blood pressure and heart rate, vomiting, loss of consciousness, seizures, and trouble breathing. Seek emergency medical help if you think you have taken too much of this medicine.

If you miss a dose, make sure to take it as soon as possible the same day. If you don't remember missing the dose, don't double it. Consult your doctor on how to adjust the missing doses.

It's best to take carvedilol at the same time each day. If you take it twice a day, you'll usually have 1 dose in the morning and 1 dose in the evening. Leave 10 to 12 hours between doses if you can. Swallow the tablets whole with a drink of water.

Do not take this medication if you ever had:

• An allergic reaction to carvedilol or any other medicines
• Lung disease or asthma
• Heart failure which is getting worse
• Have low blood pressure (hypotension) or a slow heart rate
• Liver problem
• Serious circulation problems in your arms and legs, such as Raynaud's

Do not use this medication if you are a lactating female.

Common side effects include:

• Allergy
• Chest pain, discomfort, tightness, or heaviness
• Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting
• Generalized swelling or swelling of the feet, ankles, or lower legs
• Slow heartbeat
• Trouble breathing
• Weight gain

You should practice these cautions before taking the medicine:

• Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, and there’s no safer alternative available.
• Talk to your doctor if you have hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to any of the components in the medicine.
• Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, or heart disease.

This medication may interact with:

• Heart rhythm medications
• Digoxin
• Blood pressure medications
• Cyclosporine
• Rifampin

Store the medicine at room temperature and keep out of direct sunlight, excessive heat, and moisture. Keep the medicine out of the reach of children and animals. Do not use the medication past its expiration date.
