  • Description

    (Risperidone) is an antipsychotic agent belonging to a new chemical class, the benzisoxazole derivatives. Risperidone is a Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor with this mechanism this drug produces antidepressant effects. Risperidone is an antagonist of alpha-1 (α1), alpha-2 (α2), and histamine (H1) receptors. It inhibits D2 dopaminergic receptors in the mesolimbic pathway and 5-HT2A serotonergic receptors in the brain.

  • Dosage

    Dose must be taken according to the doctor’s advice only; doses given below are suggested as supportive literature for better understanding in some areas of requirements. ADULT DOSE: For the treatment of schizophrenia: For acute or chronic patients of schizophrenia the usual initial daily dose of Risperidone is 2mg on the first day, 4mg on the second day and 6mg on the third day in two divided doses, usual maintenance doses are 4 to 8mg daily. The maximum recommended dose is 16mg daily. For the treatment of mania: starting dose is normally 2mg once a day, most people feel better with doses of 1 to 6mg once a day. For the treatment of long-standing aggression in people with Alzheimer’s dementia: starting dose is 0.25mg twice a day, doctor will gradually adjust your dose most people feel better with 0.5mg twice a day, some patients may require 1mg twice a day, treatment duration in patients with Alzheimer’s dementia should be not be exceeded more than 6 weeks. ELDERLY DOSE: For the treatment of schizophrenia: starting dose is 0.5mg twice a day, after doctor’s advice increase the dose gradually to 1mg to 2mg twice a day. For the treatment of mania: starting dose is 0.5mg twice a day, after doctor’s advice increase the dose gradually to 1mg to 2mg twice a day. FOR CHILDREN: For the treatment of conduct disorder: For children weight less than 50 kg; starting dose is 0.25mg once a day, dose may be increased every other day in steps of 0.25mg per day, usual maintenance dose is 0.25mg to 0.75mg once a day. For children of weight 50kg or more; The starting dose will normally be 0.5mg once a day. The dose may be increased every other day in steps of 0.5mg per day, the usual maintenance dose is 0.5mg to 1.5mg once a day. Treatment duration in patients with conduct disorder should not be exceeded more than 6 weeks. For schizophrenia or mania: Children and adolescents under 18 years of age should not be treated with Risperidone for schizophrenia or mania. Children under 5 years old should not be treated with Risperidone for conduct disorder.
  • In case of Overdose

    There is no specific antidote to (Risperidone). In case of overdosage, vital signs should be carefully monitored and supportive and symptomatic measures should be used. Cardiovascular monitoring should be done to detect possible arrhythmia. Gastric lavage, and administration of activated charcoal in addition to a laxative should be instituted.
  • Missed Dose

    In case you missed any dose, take the next dose as soon as you remember but don't double your next dose to compensate for the missed one.

  • When Not to Use

    Do not use this medicine if the patient is hypersensitive to any of its components.
  • Side Effects

    Commonly reported: agitation, insomnia, anxiety and headache, less commonly reported: somnolence, fatigue, dizziness, erectile dysfunction, rhinitis, rash, orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia and hypertension.
  • Precautions & Warnings

    Due to alpha-blocking activity of Risperidone, patients with cardiovascular disease should use Risperidone with caution. It may also cause orthostatic hypotension especially during the initial dose. Safety of the Risperidone during human pregnancy and lactation has not been established. If it is used in the last trimester of pregnancy then it may cause the following conditions in a newborn: shaking, muscle stiffness, and/or weakness, sleepiness, agitation, breathing problems, and difficulty in feeding.Risperidone can raise the levels of a hormone called “prolactin” that can impact fertility. Treatment with Risperidone may result in; Dizziness, tiredness, and vision problems. So, do not drive or use any tools or machines without taking the advice of your doctor first.
