Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that has a unique mode of action inhibiting the second stage of cell wall synthesis of susceptible bacteria. It prevents bacterial growth and infection from spreading.

Glycopeptide antibiotics

Vancomycin injection is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat certain serious infections such as:

• Endocarditis (infection of the heart lining and valves)
• Peritonitis (inflammation of the lining of the abdomen)
• Infections of the lungs, skin, blood, and bones

Follow these dosage instructions:

• Adults Dosage

500 mg IV every 6 hours OR 1 g IV every 12 hours.

• Child Dosage (1 month and older)

10 mg/kg IV every 6 hours

Seek medical help if you think you have taken too much of this medication.

If you miss a dose, make sure to take it as soon as possible the same day. If you don't remember missing the dose, don't double it. Consult your doctor on how to adjust the missing doses.

It is usually infused (injected slowly) over a period of at least 60 minutes once every 6 or 12 hours, but may be given every 8 hours in newborn babies. The length of your treatment depends on the type of infection you have.

Vancomycin hydrochloride is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to vancomycin, or any other excipients or in patients with previous anaphylaxis or major allergy with other glycopeptides.

Common side effects include:

• Black, tarry stools
• Blood in the urine or stools
• Cough or hoarseness
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings
• Feeling of fullness in the ears
• Fever with or without chills
• General feeling of tiredness or weakness

You should practice these cautions before taking the medicine:

• Talk to your doctor if you have hypersensitivity or allergic reactions to Vancomycin or any of the components in the medicine.
• This medication poses the risk of drowsiness, so don’t drive while on this medication.

This medication should be used with extreme caution in patients with liver and kidney diseases.

Ask your doctor about any possible drug interactions, and discuss every medicine you have been taking.

Store the medicine at room temperature and keep out of direct sunlight, excessive heat, and moisture. Keep the medicine out of the reach of children and animals. Do not use the medication past its expiration date.
