  • Description

Ticagrelor is a unique antiplatelet medication that works through different mechanisms compared to aspirin and clopidogrel. Similar to clopidogrel, ticagrelor selectively inhibits the binding of adenosine diphosphate (ADP) to the platelet P2Y12 receptor. Unlike clopidogrel, however, ticagrelor acts as an orally active, reversible inhibitor of the platelet P2Y12 receptor. By binding to the receptor and reversibly inhibiting ADP binding and platelet aggregation, ticagrelor leads to the inhibition of platelet aggregation and vasodilation. Through these pharmacological actions, ticagrelor is effective in preventing thrombotic cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction, stroke, and thrombosis of peripheral arteries. It is prescribed to patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and those who have undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Additionally, it is used for the prevention of stent thrombosis in cases where stents are inserted into the coronary arteries.
