    Alfuzosin is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker used primarily to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Its mechanism of action involves selective inhibition of alpha-1 adrenergic receptors, which are found in the smooth muscle of the prostate gland, bladder neck, and urethra.

  • Dosage

    Alfuzosin dosage recommendations are:

    • Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia - 10 mg once daily, taken after a meal.
    • Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms - 10 mg once daily, taken after a meal.
  • In case of Overdose

    Contact your local hospital Accident and Emergency department straight away. Tell the doctor or nurse how many tablets you have taken. Lie down as much as possible to help stop the side effects. Do not try to drive to the hospital yourself.

  • Missed Dose

    Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet. Miss it out and then go on as before.

  • How To Use

    Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet, as this can affect how the medication is released in your body.Stay well-hydrated, and avoid sudden changes in position to minimize the risk of dizziness.

  • When Not to Use

    Do not use alfuzosin and inform your doctor:

    • If you are allergic to alfuzosin or any of its ingredients. Allergic reactions can include rash, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and swelling of the lips, face, throat, or tongue.
    • If you are taking other alpha-blockers, as this could cause adverse interactions.
    • If you have postural hypotension, a condition where blood pressure drops upon standing, causing dizziness, light-headedness, or fainting.
    • If you have severe liver problems.
  • Side Effects

    Vertigo, dizziness, headache, GI upset. Orthostatic hypotension, syncope, tachycardia, palpitations, chest pain, fatigue, drowsiness rash, pruritus, flushes, oedema, asthenia, malaise, dry mouth.

    QT prolongation, hypertension; monitor BP regularly, particularly at start of treatment. Coronary insufficiency; discontinue if angina deteriorates. Withdraw 24 hours before anaesthesia. Renal or hepatic impairment. Cerebral circulatory disorders. Risk of priapism; warn patients to seek immediate medical assistance. Cataract surgery. Elderly
