Product Information
Metronidazole and furazolidone work together through a multi-step mechanism of action in this dosage form. Metronidazole is an antibiotic penetrates bacterial and protozoal cells and is reduced by intracellular enzymes to form reactive metabolites. These metabolites bind to DNA, causing strand breakage and inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis, leading to cell death. Metronidazole is particularly effective against anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, such as Clostridium difficile and Giardia lamblia. Furazolidone is an antimicrobial agent inhibits monoamine oxidase and disrupts bacterial enzyme systems, leading to the production of toxic intermediates. These intermediates damage the bacterial DNA, ultimately resulting in bacterial death.
