Zolpidem is a medication used primarily for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It enhances the effect of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that reduces brain activity. By increasing GABA activity, zolpidem promotes a calming effect on the brain, which helps induce sleep and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep.

Zolpidem dosage recommendations are:

• Insomnia - For difficulties with sleep initiation - Conventional tab 5-10 mg at bedtime, initial dose for women 5 mg, Max 10 mg daily
• Insomnia - For difficulties with sleep initiation or sleep maintenance - Extended-release tab 6.25-12.5 mg at bedtime, initial dose for women 6.25 mg, Max 12.5 mg daily
• Insomnia - For the elderly - Conventional tab 5 mg at bedtime, Extended-release tab 6.25 mg at bedtime.

In cases of zolpidem tartrate overdose, whether alone or in combination with CNS depressants, symptoms may include a range of consciousness impairment from drowsiness to coma, as well as cardiovascular and/or respiratory issues, which can be fatal. Recommended treatment involves general symptomatic and supportive measures, with immediate gastric lavage where appropriate. Intravenous fluids should be administered as needed. Flumazenil, which has been shown to reduce zolpidem tartrate's sedative effects, may be useful, but it could also lead to neurological symptoms such as convulsions. Monitoring of respiration, pulse, blood pressure, and other relevant signs is crucial, and general supportive measures should be employed. Hypotension and CNS depression require appropriate medical intervention. Sedating drugs should be avoided following zolpidem tartrate overdosage, even if excitation occurs. The effectiveness of dialysis for overdose treatment is uncertain, although studies have shown that zolpidem tartrate is not dialyzable. Additionally, it is important to consider the possibility of multiple drug ingestion in the management of overdose cases.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take double doses.

To use Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules properly, follow your healthcare provider's instructions precisely. Do not adjust your dose without consulting them. If you find that the capsules are not effective or if your sleep issues persist or worsen after 7 to 10 days, inform your healthcare provider, as this may indicate an underlying condition. Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules are intended for short-term use only; extended use increases the risk of abuse and dependence, so treatment should be as brief as possible. Take one capsule at bedtime, ensuring you can remain in bed for a full 7 to 8 hours. Do not exceed one capsule per night. Avoid taking the capsules with food or immediately after a meal, and do not use them if you have consumed alcohol that evening. Swallow the capsules whole without opening, crushing, or chewing them.

Zolpidem Capsules should not be taken in the following situations:

• History of complex sleep behaviors after taking zolpidem
• Allergy to zolpidem or any of the ingredients in Zolpidem Tartrate capsules

Drug interactions with zolpidem include:

• CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, benzodiazepines, opioids) (may enhance sedative effects and increase the risk of severe drowsiness, respiratory depression, and impaired motor function)
• CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, erythromycin) (may increase zolpidem levels, leading to heightened sedative effects)
• CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., rifampin, carbamazepine) (may decrease zolpidem levels, reducing its effectiveness)
• Antidepressants (e.g., fluoxetine, paroxetine) (may increase zolpidem levels and effects)
• Other sleep aids (e.g., diphenhydramine, melatonin) (may have additive sedative effects)

Store at room temperature, away from moisture and light. Dispose of expired or unused medication via take-back programs or local disposal guidelines.
