Febuxostat works by non-competitively blocking the molybdenum pterin center, the active site of xanthine oxidase. Xanthine oxidase is needed to oxidize successively hypoxanthine and xanthine to uric acid. Thus, febuxostat inhibits xanthine oxidase, thereby reducing the production of uric acid.
