Telfast: This drug (fexofenadine) is a Histamine 1 antagonist (antihistamine) Second Generation; Piperidine Derivative antiallergic drug. The H1 histamine receptor is responsible for mediating hypersensitivity and allergic reactions. After an exposure to an allergen the degranulation of mast cells and basophils occurs, which then release histamine and other inflammatory mediators. Histamine binds to, and activates, H1 receptors, which further releases pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukins, from basophils and mast cells. This mechanism of histamine binding is responsible for a wide variety of allergic symptoms, such as pruritus, rhinorrhea, and watery eyes. Fexofenadine binds to and stabilizes the inactive form of the receptor, and prevents its activation and subsequent downstream effects. Fexofenadine does not cross the blood-brain barrier and may not cause significant CNS effects.
