First Week with Newborn – How to Handle Your Baby?

New mothers often do not have enough experience handling newborns. Their fragility can be intimidating. That is why here are some basic caring manners that you need to swear by.

Pay Attention to Hygiene

According to the doctors of Midcity Hospital, newborns often do not have strong immunities. That is why they are more vulnerable towards infections and diseases. Make sure to handle your baby after washing your hands properly and advertise the same thing to everyone else too.

Provide Support to Baby’s Neck and Head

Do not lift your baby freely. Always cradle their head with your hand and provide support to their neck. Remember this whether you are holding your baby or laying them down.

Avoid Shaking

Shaking your newborn is a big no-no. Newborns are delicate and therefore should be handled with utmost care. Because continuous shaking can cause severe bleeding inside the brain which can lead to death.

If you want to wake your baby up, then do it by tickling their feet or blowing on their cheek.

No Rough Play

Always remember that your newborn is not aligned with being jiggled. Try to be as soft and caring with them as much as you can.

Attachment to your infant is what transpires into as tunning physical growth. Children demand their parents to love them unconditionally without any bias or condition in between.

You and your partner should take shifts in holding and caressing your baby. Try to hold your baby against your skin. This way you are able to provide them with the warmth that they crave.

Premature newborns especially those that are suffering from a medical issue tend to get calm with an infant massage. There exist certain types of massages that women can master so that they can take care of their newborns in a better manner.

Another newborn tip that you need to remember is that babies love sounds which is why they try to talk to them either through babbling, singing or cooing.

Newborn care guide – Sponge Bath / Tub Bath

An important thing to consider in this one is that sponge baths are when your baby still has a part of umbilical cord attached to the belly button. In order to give your baby a sponge bath, you should consider a place that is safe and flat and the temperature of the room should be warm.

Keep a bowl of warm water close by. Undress your baby. Dip a towel in the bowl and then start cleaning your baby’s body with its help of it. You can use soap on your baby as well. Keep repeating these gestures to make sure that your baby is clean.

Tub Baths

After the umbilical cord has been taken care of, your baby is now ready for a tub bath. The first baby bath should be gentle and brief. You also have to make sure that your child is relaxing because if a tub bath is overwhelming for your baby then you can go back to a sponge bath.

The essentials of a tub bath are more or less the same. You just have to add an infant tub to the list of the abovementioned things.

  • Draw water that is suitable for your baby’s temperature.
  • Avoid too hot or too cold water.
  • Run your fingers in the tub to check the water’s temperature.
  • After drawing a water bath, cut off the water supply.
  • Undress your baby and then place him or her gently inside the water tub.
  • Make sure to keep the water levels within 2 to 3 inches.

Gently massages the body of your baby and their hairs. Try to use as less soap as you can and then pour water on your baby’s body swiftly.

After the bath, you should dry your baby with a clean towel. Keep your baby away from any kind of air conditioning.

Note; Never ever leave your baby alone while bathing them. Never!!!!
