DEXA Scan Test

What is a DEXA Scan Test?

It is a high-precision kind of X-ray scan that is used to measure bone loss and mineral density. It is also known as the DEXA scan (BMD & whole body composition) test, bone scan test, bone densitometry, or dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. If you have a lower bone density when compared to the normal needed for your age, you are at risk of bone fractures and osteoporosis.

DEXA stands for “Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry”. In 1987, this machine was used commercially.  This scan machine work in a way that it sends two X-ray beams of different peak energy frequencies to the target bone.

One of the peak frequencies is absorbed by a bone and the other by soft tissue. The subtraction of soft tissue frequency absorbed from the complete or total absorption, the remaining result is bone mineral density.

DEXA or Bone Scan test in Pakistan is a special radiology test. It is accurate, noninvasive, and fast as compared to the traditional normal X-ray scan. The radiation used in this bone density scan is of extremely low level, thus making it a safe test.

In post-menopausal women, a DEXA scan is one of the best methods for checking bone mineral density.

It is a special radiology test that is conducted on a daily basis in the labs of Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and other major cities. The DEXA scan normally is used for the hips or lower spine.  The accuracy of the DEXA scan is great as compared to a normal X-ray, it can measure within 2-4 % precision. Before this DEXA scan, the only sign of low bone density would be when an elder (older person) suffer from a broken bone.

When is a DEXA Scan Performed?

A doctor would recommend a bone density scan or DEXA scan if

  • If you suffer from any symptoms of osteoporosis.
  • If you are of 60+ age (woman 65 years or above and a man over 70 years of age).
  • If you had suffered from a broken bone after the age of 50.

  • Use of alcohol
  • Use of tobacco
  • Physical inactivity
  • Diseases e.g rheumatoid arthritis
  • Decrease in height
  • Previous fractures
  • Use of corticosteroids and some other medications/drugs

How Do You Read DEXA Scan Results?

A radiologist is a specialist medical practitioner who will be able to guide you about your DEXA scan result.

The DEXA scan measures the bone loss against that of normal values for a young adult as per health standards or WHO recommendations. This is known as your T score. It is basically the standard deviation between the average and your measured bone loss.

  • -1 or above is considered the normal value or score.
  • -1.1 to -2.4 score is considered states as osteopenia and a high risk of bone fracture
  • -2.5 or above score state that it is osteoporosis and again a high risk of bone fracture.

A “Z score” may also be given to your results which are then compared with the people of your age group.
