What is Hematology?

Hematology is an advanced branch of internal medicine that mainly deals with the study of the blood, organ forming blood, blood diseases and disorders. The word “heme” is taken from the Greek language and means “blood”. In the field of medicine, hematology particularly deals with the pathology, physiology, etiology, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and follow-up of the diseases and disorders of the blood and blood-related malignancies. The malignancies related to the blood include sickle cell anemia, lymphoma, leukaemia and haemophilia.

Hematology is an ideal medicinal field for the medical health officers who have a keen interest in research related to health outcomes, clinical or basic science research and even translational research. This makes hematology an important and advanced field by continuing the major role in targeted therapy, molecular and genetic research, to diagnose and treat diseases.

Sub-specialities of Hematology

There are 4 major areas of study in hematology are:

  • Hematology oncology or hematological malignancies- This field deals with the diagnosis and treatment of the cancers of the blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes such as lymphoma, leukaemia and myeloma.

  • Hemaglobinopathy- It deals with the study of abnormalities of the haemoglobin molecules particularly in the globin chains, thalassemia and sickle cell anemia.

  • Anemia- It is a study linked with the conditions of the low levels of the red blood cells or haemoglobin in the body.

  • Coagulopathy- In this area of study, the hematologist studies the body’s inability to form blood clots such as haemophilia. In haemophilia, it becomes difficult to control the bleeding.

Blood disease and disorders mostly start to develop due to the problems that arise from the “bone marrow”. Bone marrow is responsible for the production of the blood cells. Hence, hematology primarily aims at understanding the disorders of the blood, how these problems arise, how to treat the disorders and how it affects a person’s health.

What does a Hematologist/Blood Specialist do?

Hematologists or blood specialists or blood doctors are the specialists who diagnose, treat and prevent the disease and disorders of the blood. The hematologist also works with the other health practitioners particularly oncologists, nutritionist, transplant physicians, social workers and registered nurse etc. to provide treatment to the people suffering from blood disorders.

In order to diagnose your condition, a hematologist would perform the following procedures and the tests:

  • Platelet count- To diagnose and keep a check on a blood disorder

  • Blood enzymes test- To diagnose heart disease and disorders

  • Bone marrow biopsy- To diagnose and monitor anemia, platelets, thrombocytopenia and even some cancers

  • Blood transfusions

When to Consult a Hematologist?

Your general physician will recommend you to visit a hematologist, if you are at risk of disease and disorders related to white blood cells, red blood cells, blood vessels, platelets, spleen, lymph nodes, bone marrow and cancer. Some of the conditions related to the blood that  hematologist deals are:

  • Sepsis- It is an infection in the blood

  • Leukaemia- It is a cancer of the blood

  • Lymphoma- It is cancer that affects the lymph vessels and lymph nodes

  • Anemia- It is a condition in which there is a deficiency of red blood cells or RBC’s in the body

  • Sickle Cell Anemia- In this condition the red blood cells do not flow freely in the circulatory system

  • Thalassemia- It is a condition in which the body does not make enough haemoglobin
