It is a sub-specialized field of surgery that deals with the treatment of the bile duct, pancreas, and liver. The medical specialists in this field are known as hepatobiliary and liver transplant surgeons.
The main reason due to which hepatobiliary surgeons treat the liver is due to liver cancer. The liver can get cancer from the other organs because it is a large organ. There are different types of liver cancer i.e. sarcomas, hepatocellular carcinoma, and cholangiocarcinoma.
Liver cancers can also affect bile ducts, especially cholangiocarcinoma. In the case of the pancreas, the main problem is due to adenocarcinoma. Therefore depending upon the location of cancer or tumor, the hepatobiliary surgeons use a different type of surgery. In severe cases, liver transplant surgery is done for the best possible treatment.
