28-11-2022According to the latest data, Pakistan is dealing with an alarming rise in the cases of HIV in the span of the last 10 months. Currently, there are 9,7773 people who have tested positive for HIV. This spike in the cases raises questions about the success of HIV prevention and control efforts. This is raising speculations that the health authorities are unable to control this disease.
According to the official press release “Every month, more or less 1,000 new HIV cases are being reported from all four provinces, capital Islamabad, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit Baltistan. This clearly indicates that HIV is now spreading to the general population from the key populations including people who inject drugs, male, female, and transgender sex workers,”

Expert healthcare specialists and infectious disease specialist, Dr. Faisal Mehood said that same-gender sexual acts and their prevalence in men are one of the leading reasons for the increased cases of HIV in the country. In addition to all this, the poor measures taken by Infection Prevention and Control are also the main culprit.
He said that “MSM (sexual relationship between men) is one of the biggest key populations in which HIV is spreading fast in Pakistan. Secondly, poor infection prevention and control is the major reason behind increasing cases of HIV in the country,”
Dr. Mehmood also said that if this keeps happening Pakistan will swarm with cases of HIV as well as Hepatitis C as the means for the transfer of both these diseases are the same.
